Minister of Health and Family Welfare in the Government of Karnataka, Dinesh Gundu Rao announced a scheme aiming to provide emergency assistance to patients suffering from heart attacks. The scheme has been named in remembrance of Sandalwood star Puneeth Rajkumar who passed away at a young age owing to a sudden cardiac arrest. “According to a recent study, 35% of heart attack victims are in their 40s. To arrest this rising trend and to treat heart attack victims within the golden hour, our Government is launching the ambitious Karnataka Ratna Dr. Puneeth Rajkumar Hrudaya Jyothi Yojane,” the minister posted on X.

The scheme has 2 components. The first involves the installation of Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs, a device that can detect and treat heart attacks through the application of electricity) across public places. “We have planned to install 50 AEDs in public places across the state. A single AED device can cost up to ₹1,10,000. Procurement of these devices is in progress,” the minister said in an interaction with the media.

Additionally, a hub-and-spoke model would be in place for immediate ECG scans and deployment of AI technology to detect severity of the attack. “We have made a total of 85 hospitals at the district and taluk level as Spoke Centres. Ten hubs will be created in 16 super-specialty hospitals, including Jayadeva Hospital. If the patient is in critical condition, Tenecteplase injection will be provided free-of-cost at the Spoke Centres at taluk hospitals. This injection is very effective in preventing sudden heart attacks. This treatment will help prevent immediate heart attacks, especially in those who are in a critical stage,” the minister mentioned.
