In a heated controversy, the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) has called for an immediate ban on Kangana Ranaut’s upcoming film Emergency, accusing it of distorting Sikh history and portraying the community negatively.
The film, which centers on the Emergency period of 1975-77 under former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, has sparked outrage among Sikh leaders who claim it misrepresents key historical figures and events.

Harjinder Singh Dhami, President of the SGPC, criticized the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) for approving the film without proper Sikh representation on the board. In a strongly worded social media post, Dhami demanded that an FIR be filed against Ranaut, accusing her of defaming the Sikh community. He also called for the inclusion of a Sikh member on the CBFC to ensure fair assessments of films that touch upon Sikh history.

Echoing these sentiments, Gyani Raghbir Singh, Jathedar of the Akal Takht, stated that the film disrespects the Sikh community by mischaracterizing prominent Sikh figures, including Jarnail Singh Khalsa Bhindranwale. He emphasized that the portrayal of Bhindranwale as a separatist is deeply offensive, given the painful memories of the June 1984 events.
With Emergency set for release on September 6, 2024, the SGPC and Akal Takht have demanded significant changes to the film to address their concerns, threatening further actions if their demands are not met.
