  • Health Minister orders FSSAI sample testing
  • Samples collected from 10 GBA locations

Egg-based food sales in Bengaluru have dropped by 10–15% following rumours linking eggs to cancer, prompting the Karnataka Health Department to order laboratory testing of samples through FSSAI.

Bengaluru has witnessed a noticeable drop in the sale of egg-based food items after rumours surfaced claiming that eggs contain cancer-causing substances. Traders across the city report a decline of nearly 10 to 15 per cent in sales, dealing a significant blow during the peak Christmas and New Year season.

The sudden fall in demand follows unverified claims that eggs, particularly those linked to the “Eggoz” brand, may contain cancer-causing elements. As fear spread among consumers, many have begun avoiding eggs altogether, directly affecting vendors, eateries, and food businesses that depend heavily on egg-based products.

Taking note of the growing concern, the Karnataka Health Department has gone on alert. Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao has directed the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) to collect egg samples and conduct laboratory tests to verify the claims.

Officials confirmed that egg samples have been collected from 10 locations within the GBA (Greater Bengaluru Area) limits. The samples will be tested by the Food Safety and Quality Authority to check for any harmful or carcinogenic substances.

While the testing process is underway, consumer hesitation continues to impact sales. Traders say the timing could not have been worse, as the festive season usually sees a spike in demand for egg-based dishes.

Authorities have urged the public to avoid panic and wait for official test results. Further action will be based on the findings of the laboratory reports, officials said.
