A recent warning from Indian cricket commentator Harsha Bhogle about the dangers of feeding pigeons has reignited public concern over the health risks associated with pigeon droppings in urban environments. Bhogle’s post, shared widely on social media, draws attention to the respiratory and infectious hazards caused by pigeons' excrement, which can lead to severe diseases such as Salmonella, E. coli, and fungal infections.

Former Bengaluru police commissioner Bhaskar Rao also echoed Bhogle's concerns, urging city residents to reconsider the common practice of feeding pigeons. He highlighted the often-overlooked health risks posed by pigeon droppings, which can spread bacteria and viruses capable of causing respiratory issues and skin diseases. Bhaskar further recommended spreading awareness among apartment owners and resident welfare associations (RWAs) to address the problem.

Lung diseases like histoplasmosis

Medical experts have long cautioned that pigeon droppings and feathers contain harmful pathogens, including bacteria and fungi that can lead to lung diseases like histoplasmosis. The presence of ectoparasites such as mites and fleas further exacerbates health risks, leading to skin irritations and allergic reactions.

The practice of feeding pigeons in urban areas encourages large flocks to gather, contaminating public spaces with droppings. This not only poses a health threat but also contributes to unsanitary conditions, particularly in densely populated neighborhoods. Authorities continue to emphasize the need to reduce pigeon populations and discourage feeding to safeguard public health.
