Umpires rewarded 5 runs to England as Ashwin stepped onto the field

It's a tactical ploy that you can disturb the middle of the wicket: Cook

My poor motor skills didn't allow me to get off the pitch: Ashwin

Apart from having become the second fastest to bag 500 wickets, another reason why Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin was trending on 16th February was due to his confrontation with the on field umpires who had rewarded England 5 runs as penalty for Ashwin having run on the pitch. Former England test captain Alastair Cook had characterised this move as intentional. “Is it deliberate? Yes, it is. It’s a tactical ploy that you can disturb the middle of the wicket because Ashwin wanted as much help when he bowls. That was gamesmanship there, wasn’t it,” he stated in the commentary box of TNT Sports

Ashwin however responded to this in the press conference held after the end of play on day 2 of the third test between India and England. “They clearly warned some of our batters for running on the pitch. I was aware of it, but my poor motor skills didn’t allow me to get off the pitch in time. If the English media and players think it was on purpose, it wasn’t. If that’s how they want to treat it, so be it. I went to Joel and Kumar and said ‘that’s pure poor motor skills’. If I was any better, I would have been in the Olympics. Why play cricket,” Ashwin remarked.
