It’s a common practice in Hindu households to light a lamp in front of God every day. The presence and lighting of the lamp itself gives one a sense of divine satisfaction. It is so deeply rooted in our customs and is passed for generations now.

Dating back to our ancient times, lighting a lamp was seen as a symbol of dispelling darkness, both literally and metaphorically. The lit-up lamp is a symbol of not just a spiritual or religious process but also a connection with the divine energies that are around us and are housed in the temple. 

Sacred feeling

Lighting of lamp itself is a symbol of spirituality. The agni or flame is given prime importance as it is believed to represent the presence of the divine. In many traditions, the flame is believed to be a guide, leading a person who believes in the higher spiritual powers, away from the material world and towards salvation. Lighting a diya thus becomes a small action that helps ward off any negative energies. With this essence in mind, we light a lamp in front of the lord everyday.

Many people keep a soft, gentle flame as a focus point for meditation. This not only helps spiritually but also improves concentration and also helps in improving eyesight. The act of watching the flame can help calm the mind, promoting a sense of inner stillness.

Right time for lighting a lamp

Early mornings and evenings are considered to be auspicious for lighting of the lamp. For those who worship Goddess Lakshmi, evenings are considered to be auspicious.

Types of oils and lamps

Many varieties of lamps such as earthen, brass, silver and even golden lamps are available. Earthen, brass or silver lamps are considered to be sacred.

While oils such as groundnut, coconut, till oil and special mixtures of oil are available in the market, lighting lamps with groundnut or coconut oil and even ghee is considered to be sacred.
