According to the United Nations’ Human Development Index (HDI) report, India’s average life expectancy rose to 67.7 years in 2022, up from 62.7 the previous year. Additionally, the gross national income (GNI) per capita increased to $6951, marking a 6.3% rise over the span of 12 months.
India’s HDI score for 2022 stands at 0.644, positioning it at 134 out of 193 countries surveyed in the UN’s 2023/24 report. This represents an improvement from the preceding year, reversing a downward trend observed in previous years. Notably, India’s HDI in 1990 was 0.434, reflecting a positive change of 48.4% by 2022.
HDI evaluates the average achievements across three key dimensions of human development: longevity, education accessibility, and standard of living.
Caitlin Wiesen, the United Nations Development Programme’s country representative, highlighted India’s substantial progress since 1990. During this period, life expectancy at birth increased by 9.1 years, expected years of schooling rose by 4.6 years, and mean years of schooling grew by 3.8 years. Furthermore, India’s GNI per capita experienced approximately a 287% growth.
The report also recognized India’s strides in diminishing gender inequality, citing a Gender Inequality Index (GII) of 0.437, which surpasses the global average.
