Delhi-based couple, Saurabh and Shivani Mehta, have sparked a green revolution in the pen industry with their startup, ‘Note’. Established in 2018-19, their venture was born from a shared concern about the environmental impact of traditional pens, which are predominantly made of plastic. Determined to make a difference, the Mehtas set out to create a pen that was 100% biodegradable.

Their solution? Biodegradable pens crafted entirely without plastic, offering a sustainable alternative to the ubiquitous plastic pens found on store shelves. These eco-friendly pens are designed to address the environmental degradation caused by conventional writing instruments.

Saurabh Mehta’s realization that only 5% of a pen is functional sparked their quest for alternatives. Early prototypes featured paper bodies, but the challenge lay in eliminating plastic from the refill mechanism. After four years of dedicated research, they achieved a breakthrough: refill cartridges made from paper, treated with a proprietary technique using vegetable oil as a barrier to prevent ink leakage.

Beyond paper pens, Note has expanded its eco-friendly product range to include pens and pencils made from bamboo and marble. Despite their commitment to sustainability, Note’s pens are priced between Rs 25 to Rs 500, aiming to offer affordability without compromising on environmental responsibility.

Supported by a grant of approximately Rs 16 lakh under the Startup India Seed Fund Scheme, Note has utilized these funds for product development. While currently self-funded, the company anticipates the need for additional funding to fuel ongoing research and development efforts.

In conclusion, Note serves as a shining example of how innovation and dedication can lead to sustainable solutions in unexpected industries, promising a greener future for generations to come.
