Intel has declared in a regulatory filing that it will initiate layoffs, affecting 235 employees at its research and development facility in Folsom, located in Sacramento County.

Marking Intel’s fifth round of job cuts in 2023, the layoffs are set to commence on December 31, extending over a two-week period.

In a statement provided to various media outlets, the semiconductor giant based in Santa Clara confirmed the news. The statement conveyed that Intel is actively advancing its strategy by implementing cost-cutting measures, including targeted workforce reductions in specific business areas and functions throughout the company.

In earlier rounds of layoffs, Intel cut 549 positions at its Folsom campus this year, representing approximately 10% of the company’s overall workforce. The Folsom facility is instrumental in various research and development activities, encompassing the development of solid-state drives (SSDs), graphic processors, software, and chipsets.

According to sources, there are indications that as much as 20% of employees in Intel’s client computer and data center divisions might also face layoffs.

In California, where the chip maker’s Santa Clara headquarters is located, over 13,000 individuals are employed by Intel. This constitutes almost 10% of its total global workforce of 131,900.
