Both MTR and Eastern Foods have a strong market presence in Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Andhra Pradesh. If the deals are finalized, they would mark a significant expansion for ITC in the packaged food industry across India.
Founded in 1924 by Yagnanarayana Maiya, MTR Foods has been synonymous with authentic South Indian cuisine for a century. Its flagship eatery on Bengaluru’s Lalbagh Road is a culinary landmark, drawing crowds eager to relish its iconic Benne Masala Dosa, ghee-laden idlis, and the famous Rava Idli—an innovative dish created during World War II due to a rice shortage.
Despite its humble setup, MTR’s commitment to quality and hygiene has made it a favorite among food lovers. The brand has expanded internationally, with a presence in markets like Singapore and Dubai, yet its Bengaluru outlet remains an irreplaceable nostalgic experience for many.
Last year, MTR celebrated its centenary by making a record-breaking 123.03-foot dosa, captivating social media and reinforcing its legendary status in Indian cuisine.
