The conflict between the Karnataka State Government and the Central Government over the release of funds for drought affected parts of the state reached the doors of the Supreme Court. Attorney General R Venkataramani representing the Central Government assured that prompt action will be taken before April 29th. He stated that the necessary permission for taking a decision was taken from the Election Commission of India (ECI). “Crucial update from the Supreme Court today: After long delays by the Ministry of Home Affairs, justice is finally on the horizon for our farmers. The Attorney General representing the GOI has promised swift action within a week, following the Hon. Apex Court’s intervention. We’ve been fighting hard for this, and it’s disheartening that our farmers had to wait so long. We look forward to a prompt and favourable decision,” Krishna Byregowda, Minister for Revenue, Former Agriculture, Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Minister in the Government of Karnataka said.
Chief Minister of Karnataka Siddaramaiah hailed this as a milestone in the fight for justice for Karnataka. “Karnataka was forced to file a writ petition against the Central Government in court seeking drought relief funds, as the Central Government had not made a decision on our memorandum, which was submitted in September 2023. This is a milestone and a success in our long fight to secure justice and relief for the people of Karnataka,” Siddaramaiah remarked.
Thanks to the intervention of the Hon. Supreme Court, the Central Government, which had delayed providing drought relief funds to the farmers of Karnataka, has agreed to make a decision within this week.
