Karnataka: Electricity Supply Companies present proposal to increase charge per unit to KERC

Citizens across Karnataka heaved a sigh of relief as their electricity bills had come down on account of the reduced electricity bills due to the Gruha Jyothi Scheme. They have however received a shock from electricity supply companies. 

5 electricity supply companies have submitted a request to the Karnataka Electricity Regulatory Commission (KERC) to raise the price for electricity. The losses incurred by the companies are the supposed rationale for the demand to increase the price per unit. 

 The Bangalore Electricity Supply Company Limited (BESCOM) has requested an increase of 49 paise per unit. The Gulbarga Electricity Supply Company Limited (GESCOM), Chamundeshwari Electricity Supply Corporation Limited (CESCOM) and Hubli Electricity Supply Company Limited (HESCOM) have also submitted requests to increase the price in the range of 40 paise to 60 paise per unit. The revision of prices in an exercise which is followed every December. 

A public opinion on this proposal might be sought. The KERC would also strive to ensure that the consumers are not negatively impacted by the revision of prices. This information was revealed by KERC sources to NewsFirst. 

It is unlikely that those who are receiving zero bills will bear the brunt of the increase in price.
