Karnataka has the highest number of elephants in India

Congress government has illegally disbursed Rs.15 lakh: BJP

In an incident involving the unfortunate death of 42-year-old Panchiyil Ajeesh in Wayanad that prompted INC leader Rahul Gandhi to break his routine with the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra and visit Kerala, The Karnataka Government has announced Rs 15 lakh as compensation for the deceased as the Elephant belonged to Karnataka. “The incident happened because a Makna named tusker elephant captured at Belur in Hassan District of Karnataka was relocated into Bandipur Tiger reserve in November 2023 last year and it was radio collared. Two months later an elephant was sighted in the Wayanad area of Kerala and attacked Mr.Ajeesh, resulting in his death, which was a very unfortunate incident. I sincerely condole his death. Karnataka has the highest number of elephants (6395). In the country and due to several reasons forest cover is decreasing. In this context the number of elephants coming to human habitat is increasing. In this regard I am planning to have a meeting of Forest Ministers of Kerala & Tamil Nadu and work out a plan of action to have a permanent solution for this menace to avoid man-animal conflict,” Minister for Forest, Ecology and Environment Eshwar Khandre mentioned in a letter to the Wayanad MLA I.C Balkrishan among others.

The BJP has however criticised this gesture. “Congress government has illegally disbursed Rs.15 lakh in “compensation” to a deceased individual from Rahul Gandhi’s Wayanad constituency in Kerala, attributing his death to elephant trampling, claiming that the wild animal belonged to Karnataka,” The BJP Karnataka unit stated on X.
