Judicial officers must detach themselves from the fruits of their labour: Nagarathna

The ultimate confidence which we have is of the common citizens: Chandrachud

The 21st Biennial State Level conference of Judicial Officers was held in Bengaluru on 23rd March. Supreme Court judge Justice BV Nagarathna and Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud were present at the event. “Judicial officers must detach themselves from the fruits of their labour. This would result in better quality of justice dispensation. Karnataka has been at the forefront of releasing funds and better facilities for judges. All these efforts are only to ensure that judges are insulated from pressures, so that judgments delivered are unpolluted and to ensure faithful discharge of a sacred duty,” Justice Nagarathna said in her address.

DY Chandrachud talked about the need for better facilities in district courts and the role of mentorship in building a robust legal system. He also addressed recent claims on social media that he left a hearing even when the lawyer was presenting his arguments. “4-5 days ago, when I was hearing a case, I had a little pain in the back so all that I did was, I placed my elbows on the armchair in the Court and I just shifted my chair. That video was doctored so as to delete that part that followed thereafter. The large amount of social media comments that the CJI is so arrogant, that he got up in the midst of an argument and he walked out of the Court. What they didn’t tell you was that all that he did was shift his position in the chair. 24 years of judging can be strenuous. I did not leave the court, I shifted my position in the chair.I was subject to vicious abuse, trolling…knives were out. But I do believe that our shoulders are broad enough and the ultimate confidence which we have is of the common citizens, in the work which we do,” CJI Chandrachud mentioned.
