Karnataka: Usage of artificial colours in Gobi Manchuri banned

In a move seen to be in the right direction, the Karnataka government has banned artificial colours used in Gobi Manchuri. The ban also extends to cotton candy.

Dinesh Gundu Rao, Karnataka’s health minister held a meeting with top officials to discuss the usage of these colours which can be carcinogenic in nature. 

As part of the move, as many as 171 samples of Gobi Manchurian were collected. Out of these, 107 samples were found to possess artificial colours, hazardous substances like Sunset Yellow and Tartrazine, which can be dangerous. 

Not just Gobi, but as many as 25 samples of cotton candy were also collected. Out of these, 15 had artificial colours. 

As per the Food Safety Act, the usage of these colours is unpermitted. Keeping in mind the hazardous effects of these chemicals, the government has taken the extreme step. 

Punishment 

The government has also announced that violators will be fined a humongous sum of Rs 10 lakh and will be given a jail term of up to 7 years.  

Rhodamine B ill-effects

The presence of Rhodamine B can also have disastrous consequences on the body. They are:

  • Burning of the eyes
  • Excessive tearing
  • Nasal burning
  • Nasal itching
  • Chest pain/tightness
  • Rhinorhea
  • Cough
  • Dyspnea
  • Burning of the throat
  • Burning/pruritic skin
