20-year-old Vikas Nayak found dead at Dharwad apartment; police send mobile phone for forensic analysis amid suspicion of gaming addiction and exam stress.

A 20-year-old youth, Vikas Nayak, was found dead after allegedly dying by suicide in Dharwad, triggering serious concerns over mobile gaming addiction and academic pressure. The incident occurred on February 6 at Mangalgatti Flats in Dharwad city, where Vikas was residing.

Following the incident, Dharwad police seized the mobile phone used by Vikas and began a detailed examination. Preliminary findings revealed that he was actively playing Korean mobile games, raising suspicions about possible gaming addiction. Local residents stated that Vikas spent long hours playing mobile games, suggesting that excessive gaming might have impacted his mental health.

Vikas had completed his PUC Science education and had stayed at home to prepare for higher studies. According to his family, he was also preparing for upcoming examinations but was distressed over not securing good marks. Before taking the extreme step, Vikas reportedly sent a message expressing emotional distress, stating that he could not become a “good son” and had failed to pass his exams.

The Hubballi-Dharwad Police Commissioner, N. Shashikumar, confirmed that a case of suicide was registered, and an investigation is underway. He stated that while exam-related stress appeared to be a major factor, police are also probing the possible role of Korean mobile games. He added that the mobile phone has been sent to the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) for detailed analysis.

Police officials said that the findings from the forensic report, along with statements from family members, neighbours, and friends, will help determine the exact cause behind the tragic incident.

The case has drawn attention due to a recent similar tragedy in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh, where three sisters allegedly died by suicide after falling from an apartment building while playing Korean mobile games. This has intensified concerns about the psychological impact of excessive mobile gaming among youngsters.

Police have assured a thorough investigation to identify all contributing factors behind Vikas Nayak’s death and said necessary action will be taken based on the final findings.
