The world-renowned Mysuru Dasara festival began on a traditional note today with senior litterateur Banu Mushtaq inaugurating the celebrations by offering flowers to Goddess Chamundeshwari at Chamundi Sannidhi. The ceremony was held in the auspicious ascendant of Scorpio, marking the beginning of the ten-day cultural extravaganza.

Before the formal inauguration, Mushtaq, accompanied by her family, performed special prayers at the shrine. Dressed in a saffron-colored saree, green blouse, and adorned with jasmine flowers, she carried forward the ritual with devotion, later receiving the temple’s sacred offerings.

Need for harmony and inclusivity in society

Speaking on the occasion, Mushtaq emphasized the need for harmony and inclusivity in society. “Let us build a society of love, where everyone is equal. I have lit hundreds of lamps, and today I offered flowers with devotion,” she said, adding that her autobiography—containing reflections on her connection with Hindu traditions—will be released tomorrow.

She expressed gratitude to the Chief Minister and the district administration for extending the invitation despite opposition from certain quarters. “Their support gave me strength,” she noted.

Her presence at the ceremony drew sharp reactions earlier from BJP leaders, who had questioned the government’s choice. Mushtaq responded subtly by folding her hands before the goddess, offering mangal aarti, and later remarking that the temple visit was deeply emotional.

The inauguration has set a vibrant tone for this year’s Dasara, blending devotion, tradition, and cultural pride.
