After successful rollout in Delhi NCR, private transport associations urge Karnataka government to introduce Bharat Taxi without bike taxis, highlighting benefits for drivers and commuters

Private transport associations in Karnataka have stepped up their demand for the immediate rollout of the Centre-backed Bharat Taxi service in the state, stating that the move would bring major benefits to both drivers and passengers.

At present, the Bharat Taxi service has been launched only in the Delhi NCR region. Inspired by its early response, transport unions in Karnataka are now urging the state government to implement the scheme without including bike taxis or two-wheelers. They believe that the service can offer a fair, transparent and sustainable alternative to private cab aggregators.

The Private Transport Organisations Federation has announced that it will meet the State Transport Minister at Vidhana Soudha today to formally submit its request. Federation president S. Nataraj Sharma is expected to lead the delegation. The unions will seek early approval to introduce Bharat Taxi across Karnataka, especially in major urban centres.

Bharat Taxi is a government-supported digital cab platform developed under the Central Ministry of Cooperation and the National e-Governance Division (NeGD). Designed as the country’s first cooperative-based taxi service, the app is operated directly by government-linked agencies. Union Home Minister Amit Shah recently flagged off the service in Delhi, marking its official launch.

The platform is positioned as a transparent alternative to private aggregators, aiming to end high commission charges and excessive fare hikes. Drivers registered on the app are referred to as “Sarathis,” reflecting their role as trusted service providers. Initially, around 650 driver-owners are expected to join the platform.

One of the key highlights of Bharat Taxi is that drivers receive 100% of their earnings, with no commission deductions. They only need to pay a small registration fee to access the app. In addition, they are eligible for government-backed bonuses, dividends and incentive payments. The platform also ensures equal opportunities for women drivers.

For passengers, the service promises fair and stable pricing, even during peak hours, along with transparent digital booking and quicker response times. The app is integrated with platforms such as DigiLocker and UMANG, making access easy and secure.

Transport unions say the model will help curb price manipulation, reduce financial pressure on drivers and provide affordable mobility for the public. With the Centre planning to expand Bharat Taxi to major cities across India, Karnataka’s transport bodies hope the state will soon become part of this nationwide rollout.
