Rajanna had publicly acknowledged that the voter list irregularities occurred during their own government’s tenure and accepted some responsibility for the lapses. He stated, “There is no doubt that voter list manipulation happened during our tenure. Our government was responsible for preparing the list.”

These remarks were seen as contradictory to the official party stance and were met with strong objections from Congress leaders. State in-charge Randeep Surjewala lodged a complaint against Rajanna’s statements.

After reviewing the issue, the Congress High Command directed Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to obtain Rajanna’s resignation. Siddaramaiah complied and accepted the minister’s resignation. This marks the second ministerial resignation in the Siddaramaiah cabinet following the earlier resignation of Nagendra.

The Congress leadership considered Rajanna’s comments damaging to the party’s campaign efforts, especially as Rahul Gandhi was actively targeting the Election Commission over alleged irregularities. The party aims to maintain a unified front, and dissenting voices from senior leaders were seen as harmful.
