Cold wave hits Karnataka, call to start schools across the state at 9:30 am

With temperatures dropping sharply in several districts, the Karnataka State Commission for Protection of Child Rights has urged the education department to start schools later in the morning to ensure student safety.

Severe cold conditions across Karnataka have begun to affect daily life, with people struggling to cope with falling temperatures and strong cold winds. The impact of the cold wave is being felt more intensely by school-going children, prompting concerns over their health and safety.

In response, Karnataka State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (KSCPCR) Chairman Shashidhar Kosumbe has written a formal letter to the Department of School Education and Literacy, requesting changes to school timings during the winter period.

In his letter, Kosumbe has appealed to the department to start schools at 9:30 am instead of early morning hours, citing the sharp drop in temperatures across the state. The request applies to all classes from LKG to PUC, and is suggested to remain in effect until the cold season subsides.

The appeal comes amid warnings from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), which has forecast cold wave conditions in 14 districts of Karnataka. Officials have also confirmed that temperatures have been steadily declining in many parts of the state over the past few days.

Highlighting the need for precautionary steps, the letter stresses that children are particularly vulnerable to cold-related health issues, and that schools must take necessary safety measures during extreme weather conditions.
