A sharp drop in temperatures has turned Karnataka’s heat belt icy cold, with North Karnataka recording near-freezing conditions while Bengaluru witnesses unusually chilly mornings and nights.
Karnataka is currently witnessing an unusual weather shift, as cold winds grip both the northern districts and the state capital Bengaluru. Areas that are typically known for intense summer heat are now battling biting cold, forcing people to stay indoors and rely heavily on winter wear.
North Karnataka, often referred to as the state’s “sun-scorched region,” has seen a dramatic fall in temperatures. Residents who once struggled with extreme heat are now shivering even during daytime hours. Cold winds sweeping across the state have pushed temperatures to record lows in several districts.

Dharwad district has reported a rare weather event, with the minimum temperature plunging to 5 degrees Celsius. Locals say the early morning cold is unlike anything they have experienced before. The severe chill has disrupted daily routines, with people hesitant to step out during morning hours.
Vijayapura is also facing intense cold conditions. The temperature there has dropped to 7 degrees Celsius, marking the second-lowest minimum recorded in the district in the last 10 years. Streets are seeing fewer people during mornings and evenings, as residents step out only after wearing caps, sweaters and warm clothing. Weather officials have advised people to avoid morning and evening walks to prevent health issues.
Bidar district continues to remain under cold stress as well. Despite sunlight appearing during the day, the chill persists, discouraging residents from leaving their homes. Walking tracks and public spaces remain largely deserted. Bidar recorded a minimum temperature of 7.4 degrees Celsius, and officials have warned that early morning cold conditions will continue until December 17.

Alongside North Karnataka, Bengaluru is also experiencing colder-than-usual weather. The city has been recording chilly mornings and cool nights due to persistent cold winds. While temperatures in Bengaluru are not as low as in the northern districts, the sudden dip has made winter wear necessary, especially during early hours and late evenings. Meteorologists say the cold conditions in Bengaluru are part of the same statewide weather pattern.
The India Meteorological Department has warned that the cold wave is far from over. Temperatures across North Karnataka could fall further, possibly touching 5 degrees Celsius again in January. In view of the prevailing situation, orange alerts have been issued for several districts, urging people to take precautions against extreme cold.
Overall, Karnataka, including its capital Bengaluru, is witnessing one of its colder phases in recent years. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely as residents brace for tougher winter days ahead.
