Heliborne survey in Raichur scans Maliyabad forest for rare minerals, sparking curiosity and concern as residents weigh economic hopes against ecological risks

A heliborne survey has drawn widespread attention in Raichur district, a region historically associated with gold mining. The aerial operation, focused on the Maliyabad forest area, is part of a larger exploration effort to identify rare and critical mineral deposits across Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh.

Raichur is already home to one of India’s most significant gold mines, producing nearly 1,700 kilograms of gold annually. Reports of possible mineral reserves in the district prompted authorities to deploy advanced geophysical techniques. The survey uses Time Domain Electromagnetic and Magnetic methods, which are non-invasive tools designed to measure subsurface resistivity and magnetic properties. These readings help map mineral deposits, groundwater sources, and geological structures without disturbing the land.

The operation is being supervised by the Geological Survey Department in Bengaluru and is scheduled to run from February 10 to April 30. Helicopters fly daily between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m., at altitudes ranging from 200 to 1,000 feet, and are equipped with drone cameras to capture detailed data.

Over recent days, the sight of helicopters circling above Raichur has sparked curiosity among residents. While some view the survey as a sign of potential economic opportunity, others have expressed concern about the possibility of future mining activities. Environmental impact and community involvement remain key issues for locals, who emphasize the importance of safeguarding natural resources and ensuring that any development benefits the region without causing harm.

As the survey continues, Raichur finds itself at the center of a debate that balances hopes of mineral discovery with calls for ecological responsibility and public participation. The findings, once compiled, are expected to guide decisions on whether exploration will lead to mining or remain limited to scientific study.
