Renowned Kannada writer SL Bhyrappa, aged 94, passed away today at a private hospital in Bengaluru after battling age-related illnesses. Bhyrappa, who had a significant impact on Kannada literature, was known for his profound storytelling and deep philosophical works.

Bhyrappa’s literary journey spanned several decades, and his extensive portfolio includes iconic novels such as Vamshavriksha, Tabbaliyu Neenaade Magane, Parva, Avarana, Grahabhanga, Nirakarana and many more. His works often explored complex themes, blending historical narratives with socio-political undertones. Parva, a reimagining of the Mahabharata, remains one of his most celebrated pieces, bringing new depth to ancient epics.
Honours and Accolades
S.L. Bhyrappa was honored with numerous accolades throughout his career. In 2010, Bhyrappa received the prestigious Saraswati Samman. He was later awarded the Sahitya Akademi Fellowship in 2015, the Padma Shri in 2016, and the Padma Bhushan in 2023, cementing his legacy in Indian literature.
Some of his other well-known works include Bhimakaya, Voting, Waterfall, Eclipse, Dattu, and Anveshan. Despite his passing, Bhyrappa’s literary contributions will continue to inspire generations of readers and writers alike. His loss is deeply mourned by the literary community and his countless admirers worldwide.
