The cabinet approved ₹40 lakh per acre for irrigated land and ₹30 lakh per acre for dry land, marking what the Chief Minister described as a “historic decision.” The project, requiring over 51,000 acres for canals and potentially submerging more than 75,000 acres, is expected to irrigate nearly 5 lakh hectares once completed.

Compensation would be distributed over the next three years

Briefing the media after the meeting, Siddaramaiah said the compensation package was finalized after consultations with farmers, legislators, and senior ministers including M.B. Patil and Thimmapur. He added that the compensation would be distributed over the next three years. “The Congress government has kept its word. Despite repeated appeals, the Centre has yet to issue a gazette notification even after twelve years,” the Chief Minister remarked.

Deputy Chief Minister and Water Resources Minister D.K. Shivakumar noted that the project still requires 1.33 lakh acres, including 6,000 acres for rehabilitation centers, with nearly 20 villages set to be submerged. He estimated the annual financial requirement at ₹60,000 crore.

Law Minister H.K. Patil called the meeting historic, highlighting its singular focus on expediting the Krishna Upper River project. “This decision ensures justice to farmers and paves the way for faster implementation,” he said.
