Karnataka Rajyotsava: The Day Karnataka Was Born

Every year on November 1, people across Karnataka celebrate Karnataka Rajyotsava, also known as Karnataka Formation Day or Karnataka Statehood Day. It is a day of pride and unity for all Kannadigas, marking the formation of the Kannada-speaking state in 1956.

The History Behind Karnataka Rajyotsava

Karnataka has a rich historical legacy that stretches back to the rule of the Mauryas, Chalukyas, and Vijayanagara Empire. After India became a republic in 1950, states were reorganized based on language. On November 1, 1956, all Kannada-speaking regions of South India were merged to form a single state known as Mysore.

However, several regions, especially those in North Karnataka, were not satisfied with the name “Mysore.” After years of discussion and demand, the state was officially renamed Karnataka on November 1, 1973. Since then, this day has been celebrated as Karnataka Rajyotsava to honour the creation and identity of the state.

Significance of the Day

•    Formation of the State: The celebration marks the unification of Kannada-speaking regions from the former states of Mysore, Bombay-Karnataka, Hyderabad-Karnataka, and Madras-Karnataka into one state.
•    Unity of the Kannada People: It symbolizes the unity and pride of all Kannada-speaking people, bringing together diverse regions under a common identity.
•    Celebration of Heritage: The day reminds everyone of Karnataka’s rich cultural traditions, literature, art, and history.
•    Pride of Kannadigas: Kannadigas across the globe celebrate this day as a festival of pride and love for their land and language.
•    Official Holiday: The Karnataka government observes Rajyotsava as a public holiday, with celebrations, cultural programs, flag hoisting, and honouring achievers from different fields.

How Karnataka Celebrates Rajyotsava

The entire state turns red and yellow, the colours of the Kannada flag. Streets, schools, offices, and homes are decorated. The government presents Rajyotsava Awards to individuals who have contributed significantly to the development of the state. From Bengaluru to Belagavi, every city celebrates with music, dance, processions, and pride.
