Karnataka has cleared ₹2.16 crore for an AI‑based facial recognition system to track student attendance, integrating with SATS and KAAMS from 2026–27

The Karnataka government has formally approved the deployment of an AI‑driven facial recognition attendance system across schools and colleges, marking a significant step in its e‑Governance initiatives. The order, signed on 16 February 2026, outlines both the budget and technical framework for the project, which will be integrated into the state’s Student Achievement Tracking System (SATS).

The initiative aims to replace manual roll calls with a cloud‑based AI/ML solution capable of identifying students in real time, even under low‑light conditions. Officials say the system will improve accuracy, reduce administrative workload, and provide seamless integration with the Karnataka Advanced Attendance Management System (KAAMS).

According to the budget note, the project will be implemented in two phases. The Capex phase, covering HR and GPU infrastructure over three months, is estimated at ₹62.75 lakh. The Operations and Maintenance phase, spanning 12 months, will cost ₹1.54 crore. Together, the total expenditure for development and one year of operations stands at ₹2.16 crore.

Pilot projects were initiated during 2025–26, with full rollout planned for the 2026–27 academic year. The Centre for E‑Governance will oversee implementation, ensuring compliance with digital infrastructure standards and linking the system to broader education reforms.

Officials highlight that the technology is designed to handle large student volumes and will be scalable for future expansion. By automating attendance, the government expects to improve monitoring of student participation and reduce discrepancies in reporting.

The move reflects Karnataka’s broader push toward AI‑enabled governance, with education positioned as a key sector for digital transformation. As the system goes live, it is expected to set a precedent for other states exploring similar technology‑driven solutions in public education.
