Public outrage grows after Vimal-branded gutka ads appear on KSRTC buses, raising concerns over violation of tobacco advertising norms.
Karnataka’s state-run transport corporation has come under sharp criticism after Vimal-branded gutka advertisements were spotted on KSRTC buses, raising serious concerns over the promotion of tobacco-linked products on government-owned vehicles. The ad panels, displayed in Hindi, triggered public anger as such promotions contradict restrictions on advertising tobacco, cigarette and related products on public transport.

According to reports, the issue gained momentum when a senior citizen noticed the advertisement “Kan Kan Mein Kesari,” commonly associated with gutka and pan masala brands, placed prominently on a KSRTC bus. Disturbed by the violation, the individual contacted a KSRTC official directly and questioned why government buses should carry advertisements linked to products considered harmful and socially discouraged. The citizen reportedly demanded the immediate removal of the promotional panel.
The presence of gutka-associated branding on state buses has also drawn criticism over damaging the image of what is considered one of the country’s top transport corporations. Concerns were raised that such advertisements diminish the dignity of public transport services and contradict public health guidelines. Voices across sections have objected to the administration’s decision to allow such advertisements despite longstanding norms prohibiting tobacco and intoxicant product promotions on transportation services.
