Mysuru Dasara 2025: Here are three key rituals that make it a grand celebration of heritage and tradition

Mysuru Dasara, also known as Nada Habba, is one of Karnataka's most iconic and revered festivals, celebrated with grandeur and devotion. The 10-day event marks the triumph of good over evil, commemorating Goddess Chamundeshwari’s victory over the demon Mahishasura, who, according to legend, gave Mysuru its name. The festival, which begins with the nine nights of Navaratri, culminates on Vijayadashami, the tenth day of the Ashvina month, a day symbolising the victory of righteousness.

Key Rituals of Mysore Dasara 2025

1.      Dasara Durbar: The Mysore Dasara Durbar, established by Krishnaraja Wodeyar III in 1805, is a ceremonial gathering of the royal family, officials, and the public. On Mahanavami (the ninth day), a grand procession is held, where the royal sword is worshipped, and elephants, camels, and horses parade in an impressive display of tradition.

2.      Mysore Palace Lightings: Each evening, the Mysore Palace is adorned with nearly 100,000 bulbs, offering a spectacular sight. Cultural programs featuring traditional dance, music, and theatre performances attract visitors from all over the world.

3.      Jumboo Savari: On Vijayadashami, the highlight of the festival is the Jumboo Savari procession. The idol of Goddess Chamundeshwari is placed atop a golden mantapa on a decorated elephant, accompanied by dance troupes, music bands, and decorated elephants, camels, and horses. The procession culminates at Bannimantap, where the Banni tree is worshipped, symbolising the Pandavas' hidden weapons during Agnatavasa.

Other Notable Events

In addition to the religious ceremonies, Mysore Dasara features a range of cultural events, such as the torchlight parade, Dasara exhibition, wrestling competitions (Kusti Spardhe), and bike parades. The Dasara Exhibition, started in 1880, remains a major attraction, running until December under the Karnataka Exhibition Authority. These events offer visitors a unique glimpse into Karnataka's rich cultural traditions.
