  • Ancient gold jewellery found during foundation digging
  • Honest family handed treasure to authorities
  • House construction stopped, family left without shelter

What began as a routine house construction led to the discovery of an ancient gold treasure, but the find has now left a poor family anxious and without a roof over their heads.

A remarkable discovery has come to light from a historically rich village in Gadag district, known for its temples, stone carvings and architectural heritage. While digging the foundation for a new house, a local family stumbled upon a hidden treasure, gold ornaments carefully preserved inside a copper vessel.

The discovery was made when Gangavva Basavaraj Ritti was getting the foundation dug for her house. During the excavation, a copper container buried underground caught the attention of an eighth-standard student, Prajwal Rithvik. When the vessel was opened, it revealed gold jewellery believed to belong to a royal era, including necklaces and earrings of intricate design.

Officials confirmed that the total weight of the gold ornaments is around 470 grams. Soon after the information surfaced, senior revenue and district officials rushed to the spot. Additional Deputy Commissioner Durgesh, Assistant Commissioners S Rohan Jagadeesh and Gangappa, along with Tahsildar Srinivas Kulkarni, visited the site and officially took the treasure into custody.

The copper vessel and gold ornaments have been secured by the district administration, and a detailed examination is underway to determine the exact historical period to which the jewellery belongs.

While the discovery initially appeared to be a stroke of luck, it soon turned into a source of distress for the family. The land where the treasure was found has been declared a prohibited area, forcing the construction work to stop midway. As a result, the house remains incomplete, leaving the family without a proper place to live.

Despite being a poor household, the family chose honesty and handed over the treasure to the authorities without hesitation. However, the situation has now left them deeply worried about their future. The head of the family has passed away, and the household currently consists only of the mother and her young son.

With no finished house and no immediate alternative for shelter, the family is struggling to manage daily life. Local residents and villagers have come together in support and have appealed to the government to provide assistance and ensure justice for the family that acted with integrity.
