  • Statewide narcotics testing ordered in all jails
  • FIR to be filed if inmates test positive
  • Supply networks to be traced and dismantled

In a first-of-its-kind reform move, Karnataka Prison Department orders narcotics testing of prisoners across all jails to curb drugs, track suppliers, and eliminate illegal activities behind bars.

In a major reform initiative aimed at tightening security and eliminating illegal activities inside prisons, Karnataka Prison Department Director General Alok Kumar has launched a comprehensive anti-narcotics drive across the state’s jail network. The move is intended to strictly monitor inmates and prevent the use and circulation of drugs within prison premises.

For the first time, a systematic narcotics testing programme is being introduced at Parappana Agrahara Central Jail, Bengaluru. As part of this initiative, drug screening of inmates will begin within the next two days. The programme will then be expanded to all prisons across Karnataka.

Under the new directive, both convicted prisoners and undertrial inmates will be screened. Jail authorities have been instructed to prepare detailed lists of inmates, including suspected prisoners, and conduct thorough narcotics testing. This step aims to identify those consuming ganja and other banned substances while in custody.

If any inmate tests positive for drug use, immediate legal action will be initiated. Officials have been clearly instructed to register an FIR and take strict disciplinary and legal measures against the offenders. Simultaneously, special efforts will be made to trace the supply chain and identify the source of drugs entering prison premises.

DG Alok Kumar has also directed prison officials to focus on tracking and dismantling internal and external networks involved in supplying narcotics to inmates. The objective is not only to catch users but also to expose the full supply system enabling drug circulation inside jails.

This comprehensive plan is part of a larger strategy to strengthen prison reforms, enforce discipline, and ensure safer correctional facilities. Authorities believe that this step will significantly curb illegal activities, enhance security, and restore public confidence in the prison administration.
