Renowned Bangladeshi entrepreneur and economist Muhammad Yunus has been appointed as the interim leader of Bangladesh following the resignation of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Yunus's impressive accolades include the United States Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2009 and the Congressional Gold Medal in 2010, making him one of only seven individuals to have received both the Nobel Peace Prize and these distinguished American honors.

The transition comes after Bangladeshi President Mohammed Shahabuddin dissolved parliament on August 6, 2024. Yunus’s nomination followed widespread student-led protests demanding a change in leadership. His swift return to Bangladesh was made possible by his recent acquittal on appeal of labor code violation charges, which were widely perceived as politically motivated.

In addition to his current role, Yunus has a distinguished history of public service, having served on the board of directors of the United Nations Foundation from 1998 to 2021. His appointment as Chief Advisor to the interim government marks a significant moment in Bangladeshi politics, promising new directions in the country's leadership and governance.
