In the grand finale of the 2023 Asia Cup, which took place in Colombo, the Indian cricket team delivered a masterful performance that left spectators in awe.

They restricted Sri Lanka to a paltry 50 runs, thanks to the captaincy of Rohit Sharma and a superb bowling effort. Subsequently, India effortlessly chased down the target in a mere 6.1 overs, securing their eighth Asia Cup title in emphatic fashion.

Traditionally, it’s the youngest or newest member of the team who is granted the privilege of raising the coveted trophy aloft. In this case, the honor fell to 20-year-old Tilak Varma. However, an unexpected figure joined the trophy-lifting ceremony, someone who wasn’t a player, coach, or physiotherapist with the squad.

This significant individual goes by the name of Raghu Raghavendra known as a ‘throw-down specialist,’ a role that often goes unnoticed but played a pivotal role in India’s triumph.

‘Throw-down specialist’ is a person who employs a sidearm, a cricketing apparatus resembling a long spoon, to hurl the ball at astonishing speeds ranging from 140 to 150 kilometers per hour, challenging the batsmen during net practice sessions.

Raghavendra’s responsibility revolves around delivering these challenging throw-downs to the Indian batters during their net practice, utilizing a slinger.

Hailing from the National Cricket Academy, Raghavendra holds the distinction of being India’s first-ever designated throw-down specialist. His expertise has not only benefited the current crop of players but has also assisted cricketing legends like Sachin Tendulkar and MS Dhoni in the past.
