The Supreme Court of India has taken suo motu cognizance of the rape and murder of a postgraduate doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, sparking significant legal and administrative responses. In light of this tragic incident, the court has established a National Task Force to enhance the safety of medical professionals across the country.

The Task Force, composed of prominent medical experts and government officials, has been mandated to develop comprehensive recommendations to protect both senior and junior doctors. Chief Justice of India underscored the systemic challenges regarding the safety of doctors, particularly focusing on the heightened risks faced by women in the medical profession.
The Supreme Court has directed the Task Force to deliver an interim report within three weeks and a final report within two months, reflecting the urgent nature of the situation. Furthermore, the court has ordered the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the West Bengal government to provide status reports on the investigation by August 22, 2024, highlighting the national significance of the case.
This incident has also triggered nationwide protests among medical professionals, who have long expressed concerns over their safety and working conditions. The formation of the National Task Force is seen as a crucial step toward addressing these issues and ensuring the safety of doctors across India.
