Three separate landslides ravaged the region, leading to the destruction of a section of Chooralmala town, including shops and vehicles. Local reports indicate that over 200 houses in Chooralmala village were washed away, adding to the devastating impact of the natural calamity.
Rescue operations are being conducted by personnel from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), fire brigade, and police. However, they remain uncertain about the full extent of the damage. The collapse of the bridge over the Iruvazhinji River has further complicated rescue efforts in Mundakkai village, as it was the sole bridge connecting Chooralmala and Mundakkai.
In response to the emergency, a team from the Indian Army based in Wellington, Coonoor has been deployed to Wayanad to assist with rescue operations and construct a temporary bridge to facilitate access to Mundakkai.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, with rescue teams working tirelessly to reach and assist those trapped in the aftermath of the landslides. The community remains hopeful as rescue efforts intensify, but the full scope of the disaster is yet to be determined.
