There are multiple Mayas which are being used by cyber criminals: Dr Alok

On day 2 of the Cyber Crimes Conclave, Dr Alok Mohan, IPS, DG-IGP, Karnataka delivered the keynote address on  the topic ‘Cyber Crime and Karnataka Police’.

In his address, he stressed on how the cyber crimes are increasing exponentially with rapid expansion of technology. He said, “In recent years, Karnataka has seen an exponential increase in cyber crime activities. As technology becomes more embedded in our daily lives, the opportunities for cyber crime have also expanded making the law enforcement more complex, challenging and demanding.”

He also pointed out that while technologies bring benefits, their misuse is also rampant.“While emerging technologies bring more benefits, they also increase illegal activities involving technology and digital communication. Increase in volume, velocity and scale of digitalisation has resulted in increased likelihood of security breaches and financial frauds. Criminals, especially the cyber criminals use hacking techniques to gain unauthorised access to computer systems, digital networks and databases,” he mentioned.

While he eulogised AI anchor Maya, he also noted how such AI endeavours can be used to perform illegal cyber crimes. “They exploit software vulnerabilities, employ malware or use AI based techniques to steal sensitive information. We have one Maya here. There are multiple Mayas which are being used by cyber criminals as well. They disrupt operations or launch cyber attacks on individuals and organisations,” he stated.
