Murder convict Kenneth Eugene Smith executed in US using nitrogen

Executing a convict by nitrogen gas would be most painless death ever

With his execution, the issue of capital punishment is being debated widely

The execution of a murder convict Kenneth Eugene Smith in the US using nitrogen, an unusual practice deviating from the normal practice has opened a can of worms.

Reverend Jeff Hood who was with him in his final moments was aghast at the way in which the murderer struggled in his final moments.

He said, “There was clear shock and surprise on their faces. They were told this is going to be quick, easy and painless. They kept saying this is the most humane way society has ever figured out how to execute people,” as reported by an international daily.

Though it was widely asserted that executing a convict by nitrogen gas would be the most painless death ever in practice it has not lived up to the expectations. In fact the White House has itself expressed its displeasure over the execution method, which has been seconded by the European Union and United Nations.

As reported by several portals, Kenneth writhed in pain and started thrashing for approximately two to four minutes, followed by about five minutes of heavy breathing.

In fact, earlier, Kenneth’s counsel vehemently opposed his execution on the basis that it was inhumane and experimental.

With his execution, the very issue of capital punishment is being debated widely. Ravina Shamdasani, the spokeswoman for the UN human rights office in Geneva, reportedly said: “Let’s just bring an end to the death penalty. This is an anachronism that doesn’t belong in the 21st century.”
