Former Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) from the Belgaum Rural constituency representing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Sanjay Patil, has found himself caught in controversy owing to a statement made in a gathering while campaigning for the 2024 Lok Sabha Election. Workers of the Indian National Congress (INC) surrounded his house and were involved in an overnight demonstration.

During a meeting with BJP workers in the Belgaum Rural district, Sanjay Patil made a personal remark directed at the Minister of Women and Child Development of Karnataka Lakshmi Hebbalkar. “Lakshmi will not get sleep at night after looking at the number of women who have turned up at this meeting. She has to consume sleeping pills. Else, she has to consume alcohol before sleeping,” Sanjay remarked.  Sanjay is also reported to have said “I love you” to the crowd that had gathered.
