Kumaraswamy views women as slaves: DK Suresh

Kumaraswamy claimed that statement is being taken out of context

A suo moto will be filed

Former Chief Minister of Karnataka HD Kumaraswamy found himself caught in a controversy owing to a statement made while addressing voters. Kumaraswamy had remarked that the rural women were headed down a wrong path owing to the 5 guarantee schemes of the Karnataka State Congress.

The Congress has expressed outrage over this statement. “The intention of Congress is to ensure that women must become self reliant and are not forced into depending upon their husbands for all their needs. The Congress wanted to ease the burden of women in Karnataka and the scheme has reached women across all households in the state. Kumaraswamy has made it a habit to make inappropriate comments on women. He views women as slaves. Stating that independence of women is akin to going on the wrong track reflects that the manuwadi mentality of the BJP has been adopted by you,” Indian National Congress (INC) Member of Parliament (MP) from Bengaluru DK Suresh stated on X (formerly known as Twitter).

The statements were made in the Turuvekere region of the Tumkur district while Kumaraswamy was campaigning for the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) alliance candidate from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). It has been criticised for being condescending. Kumaraswamy has however claimed that his statement is being taken out of context.

Karnataka State Women’s Commission Chairman Nagalakshmi Choudhary remarked that statements that undermine women’s character must be avoided for political benefits. A suo moto will be filed. A notice will be served to Kumaraswamy over the statement.
