I would never say that for a woman: Supriya Shrinate

Congress Chairperson Social Media and Digital Platform Supriya Shrinate’s name was not featured in the list of candidates announced by the Indian National Congress (INC) for Uttar Pradesh. The INC ticket for the Maharajganj constituency which was unsuccessfully contested by Supriya in 2019 has been given to Virendra Chaudhary. This has led to speculations that Supriya has lost out the perception battle in front of the Congress high command owing to a post on social media regarding actress Kangana Ranaut.

A post from Supriya’s Instagram handle was captioned “Kya bhaav chal raha hain Mandi mein koi batayega?” (Can anyone tell me what is the rate in the market?). This was a reference to Kanagana Ranaut getting a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ticket from the Mandi constituency in Himachal Pradesh. After widespread outrage, Supriya had denied ownership of the post that was made. “Anyone who knows me will know I would never say that for a woman. However, a parody account that I have just discovered misusing my name is being run on Twitter ( @Supriyaparody ) which started the whole mischief, and is being reported,” Supriya stated in a video which was posted for clarification after the incident. Kangana had expressed her disappointment at the comment which was passed.
