Commission directed BJP to avoid utterances along religious lines

Commission directed INC to avoid propoganda on activities of defence forces

ECI highlighted that utterances may have effects beyond elections

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has written letters to the party presidents of the Indian National Congress (INC) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over Model Code of Conduct (MCC) violations. Although not explicitly specified, one could assume that the violations being referred to are statements by BJP leaders that the Congress would distribute the wealth of Hindus among the vote bank they seek to please and statements by INC leaders that the BJP wishes to abolish India’s constitution. “The Commission directs you as Party President to also convey to all-star campaigners to not make speeches and statements, which may divide the society. The commission directs BJP and its Star campaigners to refrain from any campaigning methods/utterances along religious/ communal lines,” the ECI stated in its letter to BJP President JP Nadda.

The ECI highlighted that the utterances by the parties might have an impact extending beyond the period of MCC guidelines being applicable. “The commission directs you as party president to also convey to all-star campaigners that they do not make statements which give false impressions such as that the Constitution of India may be abolished or sold. The commission directs to ensure full compliance of the advisory which requires that “their campaigners/candidates should desist as part of the election campaigning from indulging in any political propaganda involving activities of the Defence forces and not to make potentially divisive statements regarding socio-economic composition of Defence forces,” the ECI mentioned in its letter to INC President Mallikarhun Kharge.
