Rs 3498 crore was released by the centre

Rs 18171.44 crore was the relief sought

INC leaders held demonstrations outside Vidhana Sabha

The second phase of the 2024 Lok Sabha Elections wherein voting took place in 14 constituencies from Karnataka witnessed a fiercely contested battle between the Indian National Congress (INC) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)- Janata Dal (Secular) (JD(S)) alliance. Voting will take place in the 14 other constituencies of Karnataka during the third phase of elections that will be held on 7th May.

The battle between the Karnataka State Government and the Central Government over the release of funds for drought affected regions of the state is likely to become a political issue ahead of the voting. As per their assurance to the Supreme Court, Rs 3498 crore was released by the centre to the state.

Despite claiming victory for this step, the Congress has alleged that the amount dispensed is less than 20% of what they had sought. “18171.44 CR was the relief sought as per SDRF rules for Karnataka drought relief. The Central Government has only sanctioned ₹ 3498 CR. That is less than 20% of the relief funds we had asked for. One of the worst droughts, 223 out of 240 Talukas under drought, and Karnataka gets less than 20%,” Minister for Revenue in the Government of Karnataka, Krishna Byre Gowda stated on the microblogging site X (formerly known as Twitter). Several Congress leaders including CM Siddaramaiah, DCM DK Shivakumar and the General Secretary of INC Randeep Surjewala were involved in demonstrations outside the Vidhana Sabha over alleged injustice to the state.
