Vijender Singh formally joined the BJP on Wednesday in New Delhi, in the presence of the party’s National General Secretary, Vinod Tawde.
It should be noted that as recently as March 31, Singh had reposted Rahul Gandhi’s tweet alleging PM Modi’s intention to manipulate the Constitution by securing Lok Sabha polls through “match-fixing.”
Expressing his motivations post his departure from the Congress, Vijender Singh stated, “I have aligned with the BJP for the nation’s welfare and to serve its people. My aim is to extend assistance to as many individuals as possible.”
Addressing queries regarding wrestlers’ recent protests against the BJP, he affirmed, “I will continue to discern between right and wrong and strive to empower athletes.”
Having ventured into politics in April 2019 by affiliating with the Congress, Singh contested the 2019 Lok Sabha elections from South Delhi, losing to BJP’s Ramesh Bidhuri, who also triumphed against Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) Raghav Chadha.
In recent days, Singh’s name surfaced in political circles as a prospective Congress candidate from Mathura, a constituency presently represented by BJP’s Hema Malini.
Vijender Singh, belonging to the influential Jat community, renowned for its political clout in various constituencies across Haryana, his native state, as well as western Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan.
Noteworthy is Singh’s participation alongside Rahul Gandhi during the inaugural Bharat Jodo Yatra in January last year in Haryana’s Karnal. Numerous images capturing his march with Rahul Gandhi gained traction across social media platforms.
