Priyank Kharge, the Minister for IT/BT and Rural Development & Panchayat Raj, paid tribute to the late R. Gundu Rao, who served as the Chief Minister of Karnataka from 1980 to 1983.

On the occasion of Rao’s birth anniversary today, Minister Kharge took to Twitter to reflect on Rao’s significant contributions to the state.

Rao embarked on his political journey as the Town Municipality President of Kushalanagar, dedicating a decade to this role. Subsequently, he won elections as an MLA from Somwarpet in both 1972 and 1978. During his illustrious career, he held ministerial positions in D. Devaraj Urs’s government and briefly served as the Leader of the Opposition.

Following the collapse of the Urs government, R. Gundu Rao assumed the role of Chief Minister of Karnataka. In this capacity, he oversaw various notable achievements, including the construction of the Majestic bus station in Bangalore, now known as Kempegowda Bus Station.

He also sanctioned the establishment of numerous Medical and Engineering Colleges in Karnataka.

Under his leadership, the Cauvery IInd Stage project was successfully completed within a remarkably short timeframe.

Additionally, he played a pivotal role in the development of the “Kala Mandira” in Mysore. While recognized as an efficient administrator, Rao was equally known for his flamboyance, audacity, and outspoken nature.

Beyond his role as Chief Minister, R. Gundu Rao extended his political career by winning a seat in the Parliament, representing the Bangalore South Constituency from 1989 to 1991.
