BMRCL will undertake an ambitious tree plantation initiative

It aims to plant a total of 15,000 trees in Bengaluru

It has allocated a budget of 6.9 crores for this initiative

In the backdrop of Namma Metro construction activities, a significant number of trees fell victim to the axe. To mitigate the environmental impact of this deforestation, the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has planned to undertake an ambitious tree plantation initiative. With a commitment to sustainability, BMRCL aims to plant a total of 15,000 trees, supplementing the urban greenery that was lost during metro infrastructure development.

BMRCL has already taken strides towards this goal by successfully planting over 60,000 trees across various locations. Now, embarking on a three-year project, the metro authority has initiated the tendering process to facilitate the plantation endeavour. Allocating a substantial budget of 6.9 crores for this initiative, BMRCL plans to distribute the planting efforts across three sections, with each section receiving 5,000 saplings.

In the first phase of the project, areas such as Dabaspet Phase 4 Industrial Area in Bengaluru rural district and adjacent government spaces will witness the influx of greenery. Subsequently, attention will shift to Doddaballapur in the second stage, followed by designated zones within the KIADB’s Phase III areas, including parks and buffer zones 2, 12, and 13.

This initiative is closely intertwined with BMRCL’s ongoing metro expansion projects, particularly Metro 2A and 2B. Over the past years, the metro development activities have led to the felling of thousands of trees. 3,626 trees were axed in 2021-23 for metro projects.

Acknowledging this environmental impact, the BBMP provided a report highlighting the need for remedial measures. Consequently, BMRCL has been proactive in relocating trees to the outskirts and adhering to legal mandates, such as the High Court’s directive to plant ten saplings for every tree removed.
