Tirupati Temple hit by ₹54‑cr scam: 15,000 fake polyester dupattas sold as silk; ACB probe launched to trace accountability
The Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) has been hit by yet another controversy, this time involving the purchase of fake silk dupattas worth ₹54 crore. Vigilance officials revealed that between 2015 and 2025, large‑scale irregularities occurred in procurement, adding to the temple’s string of scandals following the adulterated laddu and hundi theft cases.
Investigators found that nearly 15,000 dupattas were supplied to the temple under the claim of being pure silk, each priced at ₹1,389. However, laboratory tests conducted by the Central Silk Board and two independent labs confirmed that the material was polyester masquerading as silk. Officials estimate the total misappropriation at ₹54 crore, raising serious questions about oversight and accountability in temple purchases.
TTD Chairman B R Naidu acknowledged discrepancies in the procurement process and announced that the case has been handed over to the Anti‑Corruption Bureau (ACB) for a full investigation. “We have immediately transferred the matter to the ACB to ensure transparency and accountability,” he said.
The revelation has sparked outrage among devotees, as dupattas are considered sacred offerings to Lord Venkateswara. Allegations of fraud in the name of divine clothing have intensified calls for stricter monitoring of temple contracts and suppliers.
With the investigation now in the hands of the ACB, authorities are expected to trace the chain of responsibility and identify those involved in the scam. The incident underscores the need for stronger vigilance mechanisms to safeguard both the sanctity of temple traditions and the trust of millions of devotees.
