Russian President Vladimir Putin arrives in India for a two-day visit aboard an ultra-secure luxury aircraft that has drawn public attention for its bold “Россия” inscription and palace-style interiors.

Russian President Vladimir Putin arrived in Delhi on Thursday for a two-day official visit, receiving a grand welcome from Prime Minister Narendra Modi. While the diplomatic significance of the visit is being closely watched, it is Putin’s aircraft that has once again stirred curiosity among people in India and abroad.

Images of the Russian presidential aircraft, part of the country’s specialised fleet, quickly circulated online because of one prominent detail: the word “Россия” painted in bold red Cyrillic letters across the body of the jet. Many users took to social media asking what the word meant. “Россия” simply translates to “Russia”, written in the Cyrillic alphabet used by the Russian language.

The same aircraft had drawn global attention earlier when Putin flew to Alaska to meet US President Donald Trump. During that meeting, discussions reportedly touched on the ongoing Ukraine conflict. Putin has travelled to India now on the very same jet, which is designed and equipped exclusively for the Russian head of state.

Putin’s aircraft is valued at approximately $390 million and is considered one of the most secure presidential jets in the world. It is built to withstand a wide range of threats, including air and ground attacks. During long-distance travel, the aircraft is often escorted by Russian fighter jets as part of its security protocol.

The interiors resemble a luxury palace, complete with gold-plated fittings, leather upholstery, and handcrafted wooden panels. Reports describe multiple private offices, high-tech conference rooms, a fully equipped medical bay, a mini gym, rest chambers, a dining hall, a bar, showers, and even a gold-plated toilet seat, a detail that has become widely discussed online.

Manufactured by the Voronezh Aircraft Production Association, the jet has a top speed of around 900 kmph, a fuel capacity of 1.5 lakh litres, and the ability to fly non-stop for nearly 13,500 kilometres. Putin, known for extensive international travel, is believed to have used presidential aircraft more frequently than any other Russian leader.
