Forensic DNA tests confirm that Pulwama native Dr. Umar Mohammad, associated with the Jaish-e-Mohammed logistics network, orchestrated the deadly Red Fort car blast that killed 12 people.
The mystery behind the November 10 Red Fort car explosion has been conclusively solved. Forensic DNA testing has confirmed that Dr. Umar Mohammad, a Pulwama-based doctor, was the man behind the wheel and the primary perpetrator of the terror act.
The powerful blast, which ripped through the area near the historic Red Fort, claimed 12 lives and left over 20 people injured. The explosion was so intense that nearby shops and glass windows were shattered, causing panic and chaos in the densely populated zone.
DNA match reveals truth
Investigators had earlier suspected Dr. Umar’s role after discovering that the white Hyundai i20 used in the explosion was purchased under his name just 10 days before the attack. However, the charred remains found at the site made immediate identification impossible.
DNA samples collected from Umar’s family in Koyil village, Pulwama, were matched with biological remains recovered from the blast site, confirming beyond doubt that Umar was present in the car when it exploded.
JeM connection exposed
The investigation has also exposed Dr. Umar’s association with the Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) logistics module, consisting of 9 to 10 members, including five to six doctors. This group reportedly used their medical credentials to procure chemicals and explosive materials under legitimate cover.
Officials believe Umar played a crucial role in mobilising logistics and planning, using his professional background to disguise the movement of suspicious materials.
Family members in Pulwama expressed shock upon hearing of Umar’s confirmed involvement. A relative said he appeared “quiet and studious,” often spending time reading and avoiding social interactions. However, police sources revealed a noticeable shift in his behaviour in recent months.

Umar had been frequently travelling between Faridabad and Delhi, and was seen at several mosques near Ramlila Maidan and Sunehri Masjid. CCTV footage showed him parking his car near a mosque around 3 PM on the day of the blast, before heading towards the Red Fort area later that evening, moments before the fatal explosion.
Authorities are now tracing the full network that assisted Umar, including those who supplied materials and provided shelter. The probe has intensified across Delhi-NCR and parts of Kashmir to uncover the complete JeM module behind this devastating terror act.
