A drunk man climbed Tirupati’s Govindarajaswamy temple tower, demanded liquor, and was arrested after a 3‑hour rescue, sparking criticism of temple security

Tirupati witnessed a shocking incident late at night when a drunk man scaled the tower of the historic Sri Govindarajaswamy temple and created chaos by demanding alcohol. The temple, located in the heart of the city and considered one of the richest shrines in the country, became the stage for a bizarre drama that lasted nearly three hours.

According to eyewitnesses, the man entered the temple premises disguised as a devotee. He then climbed the tent combs and reached the tower above the sanctum sanctorum, eventually positioning himself near the Kalash at the top. Once there, he began shouting and insisted that he would only come down if given a quarter bottle of liquor.

The situation quickly drew the attention of temple authorities, police, and fire brigade officials. Despite repeated attempts to persuade him, the man refused to descend, declaring, “You don’t give it, I don’t leave.” The standoff continued for hours, raising concerns about the safety of the temple structure and devotees.

Finally, after police assured him that his demand would be met, the man agreed to climb down. With the help of iron ladders, he was safely brought down and immediately taken into custody.

Police later identified the individual as Kuttadi Tirupati, a resident of Kurma Wada in Peddamalla Reddy Colony, Nizamabad, Telangana. The incident has sparked criticism of temple security arrangements. Opposition parties have accused the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) of negligence and blamed Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu’s administration for failing to ensure adequate safeguards at such a revered site.

While the man’s actions were dismissed as drunken mischief, the episode has raised serious questions about security lapses at one of India’s most sacred temples. Authorities are expected to review safety measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
