Justice Surya Kant will take charge as the 53rd Chief Justice of India on November 24, 2025, succeeding CJI BR Gavai, and will serve till February 9, 2027.
Justice Surya Kant, one of the senior-most judges of the Supreme Court, has been officially appointed as the 53rd Chief Justice of India (CJI). He will assume office on November 24, 2025, succeeding Chief Justice BR Gavai, whose term ends on November 23, 2025. Justice Kant will serve as the head of the Indian judiciary until February 9, 2027.

The appointment was confirmed by Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal, who announced it on X (formerly Twitter). His post read, “In exercise of the powers conferred by the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint Shri Justice Surya Kant, Judge of the Supreme Court of India, as the Chief Justice of India with effect from 24th November, 2025.” Meghwal also extended his best wishes to the incoming Chief Justice.
Justice Kant’s name was earlier recommended by Chief Justice BR Gavai, as per the seniority tradition followed in the appointment of the Chief Justice of India.
Hailing from Haryana, Justice Surya Kant began his judicial career as an advocate in the Punjab and Haryana High Court. He went on to become a judge of the same court, later serving as the Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court, before being elevated to the Supreme Court in May 2019.
Known for his clarity in judicial reasoning and focus on social justice, Justice Kant has been part of several important Constitution Bench matters dealing with governance, constitutional interpretation, and environmental protection.

As the next Chief Justice, he is expected to preside over the Supreme Court during a crucial period that may see hearings on electoral reforms, criminal justice policies, and digital privacy laws.
His tenure of over 14 months will play a key role in shaping several major judicial and administrative reforms within India’s top court.
