Taxpayers get an additional day to file their Income Tax Returns as CBDT extends the deadline to September 16, 2025; e-filing portal to undergo short maintenance early morning.
In a last-minute relief to taxpayers, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has announced yet another extension of the due date for filing Income Tax Returns (ITRs) for the Assessment Year (AY) 2025-26. The deadline, which was first set for July 31, 2025, and later extended to September 15, has now been pushed further by one day, giving taxpayers until September 16, 2025 to file their returns.

The extension, though short, is expected to benefit lakhs of taxpayers struggling to complete their filings amidst the usual last-day rush and server slowdowns. The Income Tax Department also announced that the e-filing portal will undergo maintenance from 12:00 AM to 2:30 AM on September 16 to enable necessary updates in filing utilities.

Officials clarified that the move was made to ensure a smoother experience for filers and to handle the surge in submissions. Experts have welcomed the decision, saying even a one-day window can make a significant difference for businesses and individuals racing against the clock.
